This is by far the most requested piece by Nathan Howe. The Other Prodigal is a song about redemption, forgiveness, and the power of a father’s love for both of his sons. The song was written in 2003 in the coastal town of Ulladulla, New South Wales, Australia. The text was inspired by a 2002 address by Jeffrey R. Holland. This is a modal hymn that eloquently teaches the Plan of Salvation. The text by David Macfarlane was written in stages – before, during, and after his missionary service in Argentina. The hymn describes elements of the premortal life, the veil, recognizing the Spirit, and being reconciled with God through Jesus Christ, followed by stirring descriptions of the praise and good works that accompany true conversion.
This piece was written for a good friend in Berkeley, NSW Australia in 2003. The three verses are four-line stanzas of a sonnet describing the relationship of the believer with Christ, while the refrain is the final two-line prayer:
