It has become a tradition in our family that I write a song when each child is baptized. When I was thinking about our nephew Ryan and his baptism in 2012, I saw a need for a song written especially for boys that lays out the ideal pattern for their lives. This newly-arranged version is appropriate for Primary children and other singers with limited range, or who need more support from the piano. Promises was written for the baptism of our niece Zoey. It describes our relationship with the Savior by discussing what we promise him, and what he promises us in return.
For several years, I played the piano for Primary every Sunday, where I get to hang out with kids ages 3 to 11. When I was a kid in Primary, they had a “child of the month” or “child of the week” or “star child” or something, which was basically a way to help the kids get to know each other. In our ward, we now do a similar activity called the Spotlight.
